We are all a very happy, relaxed, content family this afternoon ....(insert deep sigh of relief here)....we had Matthew's school's Open House late this afternoon & saw which Kindergarten class he'll be in, met with both his teachers, got to spend time in his classroom, ask questions, see who else was in his class. Matthew saw that he knew a lot of children in his class, he got to sit in his seat (the teachers grouped the strong readers together - thank you!) and see who will sit around him. He & Patrick played in the various centers and we got to learn what his schedule will be like. He'll be having a snack on the playground around 9:45 every day & he'll have lunch at 12:30. He'll have P.E. twice a week, go to art once a week (but they also have art centers in their classroom), go to Spanish twice a week, go to Technology Lab once a week (but they also have 5 computers in their classroom for computer center) and they'll go to the Library once a week. The school has an advanced reading program that they'll get Matthew in once school is underway for a few weeks - since he's such a strong reader that will continue to challenge him.
One nice bonus benefit of having the preschool in the same school as the grade school is that the 4y/o preschool teachers fill out cards all about the children and pass that info on to the Kindergarten teachers. So his teachers already know what kind of boy he is, what his strengths were last year, etc etc.! He also knows a lot of children because they were in his classes either for 3y/o preschool or 4y/o preschool!
His teachers are GREAT! He has two - Mrs. Haslam & Mrs. Hamlin. What is funny is that Mrs. Haslam's parents live in our neighborhood & she actually grew up in our neighborhood! They are super nice people & I secretly was hoping she'd be the teacher Matthew got! She's just the kind of person you instantly love. Mrs. Hamlin I didn't know but she was so nice & they were both very engaging to Matthew and interested about what he liked and talked to him a lot. We feel SO much better. Matthew had been somewhat anxious the past few days and when we walked out to the car he said "I'm not at all nervous about school anymore!". That's my boy!

Congratulations on this big endeavor in Matthew's life and in your's...Please give Matthew our congrats also! Elizabeth was asking about him the other day and in fact she said "Matthew will love Kindergarten. He'll have lots of friend's and learn so many more things." Then she asked if she would ever see him again. But he definitely holds a special part in her heart...
I'm so glad that Matthew is not at all nervous anymore. That'll make starting kindergarten so much easier for you both.
