Happy Teeth...

The boys had their dental appointments today with our pediatric dentist, Dr. Abdoney. It was Matthew's routine 6 month check-up but it was Patrick's 1st dentist visit! Matthew did wonderfully, as expected, the first grown-up tooth that is coming in looks great & he's been doing a great job taking care of those chompers.

Patrick was a little apprehensive - more so than Matthew was at the same age - but that is just Patrick...he's much more likely to really express how he feels. Patrick's teeth looked great too but just like our regular pedi expressed...that index finger sucking has created a problem. Our pedi got it right...Dr. Abdoney agreed that the sucking narrowed the palate and this little boy will need a spreader (retainer-type device) around age 7 & some sort of orthodontics later on. Oh well...at least we know it's coming! He said he could have been prone to this already or may have already had a more narrow palate at birth - obviously since no one noted if that was the case, we don't know for sure...but either way we have to do our best to reduce the index finger sucking. Fun, fun....truly that is his security & self-soothing mechanism. Wish us luck!

Sarah had a narrow mouth (inherited from her father) and she had her jaws spread with an appliance when she had just turned eight. It hurt for the first day or two, but then it was no big deal. Amazingly, it only took about three or four months for the appliance to do its job.

That's good to hear! Doesn't sound very appealing to have done but I know it's needed!
